KRYSTOL WATERSTOP
The next phase in construction joint design, the Krystol Waterstop SystemTM ensures that your concrete waterproofing doesn't slip through the cracks - or the construction joints.

The Krystol Waterstop System utilizes two products rich in crystalline chemicalreactive technology, Krystol Waterstop GroutTM and Krystol Waterstop TreatmentTM,both featuring a distinctive colored tint that makes them easy to identify andinspect.

The system is quick and easy to install. A triangle-shaped strip of Krystol WaterstopGrout is added at the site where a new wall is to be poured. Once the grout hascured, a layer of Krystol Waterstop Treatment is applied, and the wall can bepoured as normal.

The Krystol Waterstop System is more reliable and durable than old-fashionedbentonite, PVC or swellable urethane joint designs. These joint design systemsfrequently shift or become damaged during concrete pours. And they deteriorateover time, leaving joints unprotected. The Krystol Waterstop System is virtuallyimpossible to damage during construction.

By reducing the requirement for skilled trades, this crystalline concrete jointdesign system saves up to 50% of the cost of an installed PVC or bentonite jointdesign system. It bonds naturally to freshly poured concrete and adapts to curvedor uneven surfaces for maximum design flexibility. And since it's easy to retrofit, the Krystol Waterstop System comes to the rescue when other joint sealing orfilling systems fail.

The Krystol Waterstop System provides two levels of protection: an integral crystallinewaterproofing barrier, plus a physical grout barrier with a compressive strengthgreater than most structural concretes.

Used in conjunction with the Krystol Waterproofing AdmixtureTM or the KrystolCrack Repair & Surface Applied SystemTM, the Krystol Waterstop System providesa permanent, watertight seal. And, like the entire Krystol system, it's fullyguaranteed.

KRYSTOL CONCRETE WATERPROOFING SYSTEM
ODLINS BUILDING, New Zealand - Project case study

Background
Wellington (New Zealand's capital) is situated alongside Wellington Harbour and is home to many museums, theatres and arts festivals and is a leading centre for creative industries, such as film and computer technology. It is also the new location for the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) which is situated inside the historic Odlins building in the business district's waterfront.

Originally built on reclaimed land (allowing the railway to be extended in 1893) in 1907, the Odlins building was home for C&A Odlin Timber and Hardware Co. It was once situated right next to the water and among the interiors impressive features are two huge timber trusses spanning the width of the attic floor. In 2001, plans began to retrofit one floor of apartments, four floors of office space, a ground floor retail area and a basement car park inside the heritage four-storey building.

The biggest challenge faced by both the contractors (LT McGuinness) and architects/engineers (Athfield Architects, Dunning Thornton) was that the Odlins building was older, bigger, wetter and more rotten than most. "…there has been a lot of interest to see what we do to keep the heritage elements, and also modernize it…" says LT McGuinness.

Structural work and repair began on the building in January 2004, and once frame work to support the building was complete, work on the basement began. Contractors were literally swimming since the basement was submerged under 1.5m of water. An additional challenge to this was because construction was below sea level and required meticulous planning in dealing with tides.

Solution
To ensure the building's new parking garage would remain leak-free, LT McGuinness needed a concrete waterproofing solution that would provide a watertight resistance to hydrostatic pressure and could also protect against ingression of tidal pressure. McGuinness looked to Fraser Brown & Stratmore Limited for a crystalline waterproofing solution. Technical Sales Manager, Jeremy Mallender recommended Kryton's Krystol waterproofing system.

Kryton's Krystol™ Internal Membrane(KIM™) was used because of it's resistance to both tidal waters and hydrostatic pressure from any direction. Tests have shown that "Krystolized" concrete can hold back hydrostatic pressure with up to 140 metres/460 feet of water head pressure.

When added to a concrete mix or applied to existing concrete, Krystol™ creates a chemical reaction that causes needle-like crystals to grow, filling the spaces between concrete particles and permanently blocking the movement of water in all directions. If small cracks later form, incoming water causes additional crystals to grow, self-sealing the cracks and stopping the movement of water through the concrete. The Krystol™ crack repair system (Krystol™ T1/T2) was also used to stop leaks in areas of the basement where KIM™ had not been used.

Six months have passed since the Odlins building's completion in June 2005. Today it remains an historical and iconic reminder of the past, resurrected and leak-free.

BIO-R

BIO-R is a non-toxic, biodegradable concrete release agent, which reacts with the alkaline products of setting cement to form insoluble soaps. These soaps prevent any bond developing between the concrete and formwork and ensure a clean, even, blemish free surface with minimum voids.

BIO-R has been formulated to provide users with a petroleum-free, non-waterbased release agent providing the same release properties as other premium release agents such as DISCRETE.

BIO-R does not affect the natural bonding characteristic of paint, plaster, and other cementitious coatings.

Advantages & Benefits

BIO-R
- Is simple to use
- Non-toxic
- Almost odourless
- Biodegradable
- Free of sulphur and aromatics
- Contains no petroleum making it safe to handle and use on a daily basis

BIO-R
- Produces a clean white release with minimum of voids
- Maintains the surface of steel moulds – no build up of residue
- Increase the life of wooden forms and prevents rust of steel forms
- Will not stain or discolour concrete
- Ready to use as supplied
- Is not water based, and will therefore not wash off forms when exposed to showersor light rain.

Krystol T1/T2
Krystol T1/T2 concrete waterproofing treatment is a cost-effective, permanent and reliable alternative to traditional membrane-based waterproofing systems for prevention, repair and maintenance of existing concrete structures.

Krystol technology becomes an integral part of the concrete. It is surface applied to existing structures to repair leaking concrete and eliminate future leaking through micro cracks and pores. The Krystol T1/T2 System is permanent and replaces the need for conventional membranes. When applied, millions of needle-like crystals form and fill the naturally occurring capillary pores and microscopic voids within the concrete. Paths for harmful moisture and aggressive chemicals are blocked, Permanently.

KIM (Krystol Internal Membrane)
KIM is a unique crystal-forming additive that provides long-term protection for buildings and other structures by waterproofing concrete from the inside out. KIM is added to batches of concrete during the mixing process for new construction projects. The high-growth organic component of the product reacts with water and un-hydrated particles in concrete to form millions of needle-like crystals. These crystals grow and migrate through the concrete to fill in hair-thin pores and microscopic voids that would otherwise serve as passages for harmful moisture.

KIM technology enhances the natural hydration process in concrete, increasing compressive strength over time and dramatically reducing cracking caused by shrinkage. KIM is also self-sealing. The high-growth organic chemicals left over from the initial cure period remain dormant in the concrete for years. When factors such as settling cause minute cracks in the concrete, KIM seals these cracks without the need for costly maintenance. A 25-year warranty for KIM is available.
